February is Heart Month!

Eating Well for a Healthy Heart

February is heart month. Did you know that by reading labels you can help to keep your heart healthy! Health Canada has rules that companies must follow if they want to put a health claim on a food. These claims can help us choose foods that are part of a healthy diet and reduce the risk of chronic disease. One of these claims states that foods low in saturated and trans fat can reduce the risk of heart disease.

With your child, look at the Nutrition Facts table on food labels and try to find foods that have less than 2 grams of saturated and trans fat combined.

Another heart healthy tip is to try to eat foods with omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fats are healthy fats that can protect your heart. Good sources are: fish, ground flax seed, canola oil, soybean oil, walnuts, omega 3 eggs and non-hydrogenated margarine made from canola or soybean oil.

Simple heart healthy tips include:
• Use canola or soybean oil for cooking and in recipes
• Add ground flax seed to homemade pancakes, muffins, cereal
• Add walnuts (if allowed) to salads or baked goods, or eat as a snack
• Buy omega-3 eggs
• Have a tuna sandwich once or twice a week
• Use non-hydrogenated margarine made from canola and/or soybean oil.
• Try this pizza crust recipe. Top with grilled chicken and lots of vegetables. Enjoy supper together as a family… it’s good for the heart!

Whole Grain Pizza Crust

Prep: 20 minutes
Rise: 2.5 hours

325 mL (1¼ to 1½ cups) all-purpose flour
185 mL (¾ cup) whole wheat flour
65 mL (¼ cup) yellow corn meal
65 mL (¼ cup) ground flax seed
5 mL (1 tsp) active dry yeast
5 mL (1 tsp) salt
250 mL (1 cup) warm water
In a large bowl, combine 250 mL (1 cup) of the all-purpose flour, the whole wheat flour, cornmeal, ground flax seed, yeast and salt. Add water, stirring until combined. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough that is smooth and elastic (3-5 minutes total). Shape dough into a ball. Place in a lightly greased bowl, turn once to grease surface. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 2 ½ - 3 hours. Punch dough down. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide dough in half. Cover and let rise for 10 minutes. Shape dough and add your favourite toppings. Makes 2-12” pizza crusts.
